Marriage and civil partnership ceremonies can take place in religious buildings, provided the venue is officially registered or licensed for this purpose.

If you are planning your ceremony in a religious venue, the person responsible for the building will advise whether you need to complete civil legal preliminaries or if banns can be read instead.

If you are unsure which applies to you, please contact us at ceremonyco-ordinator@coventry.gov.uk for guidance.

Important: If you book an appointment to give civil preliminaries and they are not required, your appointment fee will not be refunded.

Some religious venues may also require a Registrar to attend on the day to complete the legal formalities of your marriage.
